Does every wheel rim have to be inspected in Switzerland?

Fortunately, not every rim has to be presented to the Swiss Road Traffic Office. Only those that do not correspond to the original dimensions (visible in the type approval certificate details) or have not already been tested for this vehicle by a rim importer.

How do I register rims in Switzerland?

  1. Fill out our rim certificate request.
  2. We will then inform you whether the rims are compatible with your vehicle or not. If they are, we will send you a link and you can order it directly online. If no rim certificate is available, we will contact you directly and find another solution.
  3. After ordering, we will send you the document physically by post, and you can register for a rim inspection at the cantonal road traffic office with a photo of it (costs vary between 50.00 and 85.00 CHF depending on the canton).
  4. To ensure a smoother process at the road traffic office, you must provide the vehicle registration document along with our Swiss rim certificate.
  5. The appointment usually takes about 15 minutes and, after reviewing our rim certificate and your rims, you will be granted approval for legal driving in Switzerland.
  6. This inspection will be recorded in your vehicle registration document and will make it clear to any police officer during a traffic stop that this is now officially compatible.

When do I need a Swiss wheel certificate?

A wheel certificate is required when you want to mount new rims on your vehicle that are not listed in the vehicle's documents. The certificate confirms that the rims meet the technical requirements and thus ensure safe use.

It is advisable to check before buying new rims whether a Swiss wheel certificate is required and will be issued. You can request it here!

Which rims can I use on my car in Switzerland without needing registration/MOT inspection?

If the following criteria are met:

  1. Original manufacturer rims (OE rims). Rims specifically approved by the vehicle manufacturer for your vehicle model can be used without additional documents. You can find these rims in your vehicle's type approval.
  2. Rims that match the dimensions in the type approval: If the rims have the same size, offset (ET), width, and bolt pattern as the original rims, no additional expert report is required.
  3. Conformity with vehicle equipment: The rims must not hinder freedom of movement and must be compatible with the tires used. ABS, steering, and other safety-relevant systems must also not be affected. Installation must be carried out without bodywork or modifications to the vehicle.

Why are certified Swiss rim reports important for car owners?

Certified Swiss wheel reports are important for car owners as they ensure compliance with Swiss regulations and safety standards. With a valid wheel report, car owners can be sure that the wheels used meet the required specifications and that their vehicle is safe and, above all, legal on the road. Otherwise, very high fines, such as a paid inspection appointment at the road traffic office, may follow.

What do I need to consider when trying to register lowering springs and rims with the MFK?

You need an expert report for your rims and an expert report for your lowering springs. If you are looking for an expert report for your lowering springs, feel free to visit here. For the rim expert report, you can send us an inquiry here.

What do I need to consider if I want to register wheel spacers and rims with the MFK?

For the wheel spacers, you need an expert opinion confirming that they are suitable for your car. If the track width deviates by more than 2% from the OE value, you will also need a DTC expert opinion. Feel free to contact us by email at hallo@schweizerfelgengutachten.ch.

For your accessory rims, you need an expert opinion confirming that the vehicle/rim combination is permitted. During the MFK inspection, everything will then be entered into your vehicle registration document.

Do I need to have my vehicle re-inspected if I buy new rims?

Yes, if you buy new rims, you must have your vehicle inspected again to ensure that the new rims comply with legal requirements and do not pose a danger to road traffic. The inspection is carried out by the road traffic office or a testing organization and confirms that the new rims are compatible with your vehicle and comply with legal regulations. Without the rim inspection report, you risk a fine or, in the worst case, even losing your registration.

What does DTC or FACT mean?

The Dynamic Test Center (DTC) or FAKT is a recognized testing center of the Federal Department of Justice and Police (FDJP). They carry out independent and comprehensive tests on the active and passive safety of vehicles, aircraft and their components. Among other things, vehicles are tested for possible track widening outside the norm.

What is the difference between a rim report and the DTC or FAKT report?

In most cases, rims that have not been type-approved by the car manufacturer together with the vehicle or VSA/ASA-approved by an importer must be inspected separately. A simple rim report such as the one we issue is required.

A report from the DTC or FAKT allows changes to be made to the vehicle that deviate from the legal standards. For example, if the offset of the opposing rims is reduced by more than 1% of the track width, this results in a track widening with a deviation of more than 2%. In this case, you must present a rim report and a test report from the DTC or Fakt for the track widening in accordance with VTS Art. 56 Para. 1 + 3 when the vehicle is inspected (at the cantonal road traffic office).

Where can I find the offset of my rim?

In most cases, the offset (ET) of your rim is stamped on the inside of one of your spokes. If this is not the case, it will be located elsewhere on the inside.

Will my tire pressure sensors work with aftermarket rims?

Yes, tire pressure sensors can also work with accessory rims, as long as the rims are tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS)-compatible. Direct sensors (on the valve) must be installed in the new rims and may need to be reprogrammed. Indirect systems are independent of the rims and work without adjustments.

Important: Have the installation and calibration carried out by a specialist to avoid damage and comply with legal regulations. Ensure that accessory rims are suitable for tire pressure sensors.

What are tire pressure sensors and why are they important?

Tire pressure sensors are electronic devices that monitor the air pressure in a vehicle's tires and transmit information to the tire pressure monitoring system. This system is either directly integrated into the tires or indirectly via wheel speed measurement and is one of the safety-relevant components of modern vehicles.
